Salento or Filandia: which to visit (or how to combine both)

Salento and Filandia are the two most visited towns in Quindío and many travelers wonder which to choose. The good news: they’re less than 30 minutes apart, so you can see both. But if you must decide, this comparison will help.
Salento in a nutshell
Salento is the most touristy and lively: its craft-filled Calle Real, its viewpoint and, above all, being the gateway to the Cocora Valley. It’s the best base if your priority is the wax-palm hike and a bustling town vibe. In high season it can get crowded.
Filandia in a nutshell
Filandia, the Lit Hill, is calmer and more authentic. It stands out for its 360° viewpoint, its bahareque architecture, the basket-weaving tradition and one of the best food scenes in Quindío. Ideal if you want calm, photography and good food without big crowds.
Key differences
- Atmosphere: Salento livelier and more touristy; Filandia quieter.
- Nature: Salento is the base for Cocora; Filandia has the Barbas Bremen reserve for birds.
- Food: both excellent; Filandia surprises with local-produce cooking.
- Crowds: Filandia is usually less busy on weekdays.
Which to choose (or how to combine them)
If you only have one day and want the Cocora Valley, choose Salento. If you want calm, viewpoints and great food, go to Filandia. The ideal is to combine both: stay in one and spend half a day in the other. Many travelers sleep in Filandia (quieter) and go to Salento for Cocora.
