Coffee tours in Quindío: how to choose the best coffee farm

A coffee tour is one of Quindío’s must-do plans: you walk the coffee field, understand the bean-to-cup process and finish by cupping single-origin coffees. Here’s how to choose the ideal tour for you.

Why take a coffee tour

Quindío is the heart of the Coffee Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A coffee tour connects you with that tradition: you learn about planting, harvesting, depulping, drying, roasting and cupping, guided by local growers. It’s educational, sensory and suitable for all ages.

Types of tour

  • Traditional: a walk through the field and the classic process, with a tasting. Ideal for a first time.
  • Premium: deeper, focused on varieties and quality (sometimes not for small children).
  • Brewing / barista: ends in a lab learning methods like V60, Aeropress or Chemex and cupping several single-origin coffees.
  • Hands-on: dress as a picker and live coffee culture in a theatrical way, as at RECUCA.

Duration, cost and where

Most tours last between 2 and 3 hours. The best-known farms are near Salento (such as Finca El Ocaso) and in Calarcá/Barcelona (such as RECUCA). Many are reached on foot or by Willys jeep from the square. Prices vary by tour type and whether transport or lunch is included: always confirm with the farm.

How to book and what to bring

Book ahead in high season, especially for tours in English or with limited spots. Ask about the guide’s language, what’s included and the meeting point.

  • Comfortable shoes and clothes that can get dirty.
  • A light rain jacket and sunscreen.
  • Cash for the entrance and coffee purchases.
