How to get to Quindío and get around the towns

Getting to Quindío is easy: it has its own airport and excellent road connections to Colombia’s main cities. Here we explain all the options and how to get around once you’re in the Coffee Region.

By air

El Edén International Airport (AXM), near Armenia and La Tebaida, receives direct flights from Bogotá, Medellín and other cities. From the airport, Salento is about 45-60 minutes away and Armenia 15-20 minutes by taxi or transfer. You can also fly into Pereira (Matecaña Airport), less than an hour from several Quindío towns.

By road

Quindío is very well connected:

  • From Bogotá: about 7-8 hours by car or bus.
  • From Medellín: about 5-6 hours.
  • From Cali: about 3 hours.
  • From Pereira: less than 1 hour.

Frequent intercity buses run from the Armenia bus terminal to the rest of the country.

Getting around the towns

  • Intercity buses: cheap and frequent between Armenia and Salento, Filandia, Calarcá, etc.
  • Willys jeeps: the iconic transport; they leave the squares for rural areas and attractions like the Cocora Valley.
  • Taxi or apps: handy for short trips or with luggage.
  • Rental car: gives the most flexibility for farms and remote towns.

Practical tips

  • Carry cash for buses, jeeps and farms.
  • Distances are short: most trips between towns take under an hour.
  • In high season, leave early to avoid traffic toward Cocora and the parks.
  • Keep your accommodation’s address and contact to coordinate your arrival.
